Today is gorgeous weather and Key West is hosting their annual seafood festival. Martha has her GPS loaded with assorted geocache way-points to search out while on route to Key West. It’s a great day for a motorcycle trip and thankfully no cruise ships are scheduled to be in port today and flood the KW streets with tourists. Lots of pictures after the break.
The Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen Association organizes and hosts Seafood Festivals all along the different communities in the Keys and today’s event is held in Bayview Park, KW. The park is filled with locals and the live music and aromas wafting through the venue are intoxicating. Beer is $2 a refill and everyone is carrying around assorted seafood samplers and enjoying the return of balmy weather. Martha chose the keys lobster and I ordered the dolphin. The locals call it dolphin NOT the politically correct tag mahi-mahi. People in the keys never assume the dolphin fish is a porpoise (marine mammal).
We left the park around 3pm and headed down to Duval St. to check out the tourist strip. The weather was warm and all the street side cafes/restaurants were abuzz with activity. We found a parking spot on the street and headed toward The Bull pub. This historic building is one of the last ‘old-time’ Duval Street open-air bars. It consist of three floors each with it’s own unique character. The main floor or Bull is lined with old murals of life from Key West past and has daily live music and drink specials. The next floor up (Whistle Bar) is ringed with a balcony to give a birds eye view of the street life below. The roof top level is a clothing optional area called the Garden of Eden, and of course Martha headed straight up to check out the local talent. Martha got her eyes filled at the ‘sausage fest’ on the roof and came down almost speechless. She said “you have to go up there and see this old guy, his dick is hanging halfway to his knees”. Too bad for her, they had a strict no camera/cell phone rule so she couldn’t record her legend worthy find!
We left Key West around 5:30 and headed back to have supper on the patio at the Island Fish Co in KCB. It was a full day of entertainment and a great way to start our winter pilgrimage.
