Bike Trip to Cottage Country

Photo-Album-LinkTom and I packed up the bike and headed off for a 3 day motorcycle trip through cottage country this week. The weather was warm so we wore shorts under our protective riding gear. We followed along Lake Huron and decided to stop for a lunch break in Goderich. We then cut across the Bruce Peninsula at Owen Sound and made a rest stop at a shady park along the Meaford River. Later in the afternoon we stopped in Collingwood for gas and I slipped next door and bought a pastry from the Swiss bakery. We sat at their streetside cafe table and enjoyed the people watching while we consumed our coffee and pastry.

We stopped for the night at a bed and breakfast in the Horseshoe Valley area called the Heigh Head B&B. Our accommodations were very comfortable including a king size feather bed, the whole lower floor entertainment room, library, and small dinette. After we unpacked and changed out of our clothes, we relaxed in the hot tub on the lower patio. Around 8 pm we searched out a local eatery called Abbott?s of Craighurst and enjoyed pints of beer from Creemore Brewery and then had a delicious meal.

The second day of our journey took us north into the Muskokas along Lake Muskoka, Lake Rousseau and Bass Lake. This is where the roads started to get interesting and curvy. We stopped in Bracebridge for lunch and took the historic river walk and checked out the waterfalls. The roads towards the Halliburton area have new pavement and the fast sweeping curves are smooth and gravel free. The scenery was so beautiful with a lake around every bend. Now I know why the Kawartha region is such a popular vacation spot for the GTA residents. We stopped at Paudash Lake for a mid afternoon snack and a pop at the quaint post office/bus stop/internet kiosk/variety store before we headed south to our next B&B destination. The GPS worked really well and led us on some very scenic roads.

We found our next nights lodging at the Dundela Bed and Breakfast [ just recently changed name to Moffat House B&B ] in an old distinguished part of Peterborough. Our large suite had a private bath, marble fireplace, king bed and separate sitting room. [ see picture ]. We showered, relaxed on the patio overlooking the gardens then decided to explore the downtown core for supper. We ended up at a new restaurant called the Black Horse Pub. I had fish and chips and Tom had the best Indian buttered chicken he has ever tasted. For dessert we shared a raspberry cheesecake.

On the last morning of our trip we awoke to freshly brewed coffee, assorted cereals, fresh cut fruit, and a lovely breakfast Strata made by our hostess. It was kind of like a cheesy sausage quiche. Around 10 am we finally got packed up and headed out towards Port Perry to stop at the DMV to get a used bike information package so I can legally sell my bike. Around 1pm we stopped for lunch at a streetfront Italian cafe in Bolton. We shared a Greek salad, a bowl of Italian wedding soup, and a small gourmet pizza. Being in the area, we stopped in on Rosemary at Marvellous Munchies in Caledon East. Thanks for the coffee and conversation. The roads through the Hockley Valley area are up and down like a roller coaster and my stomach was in my mouth more times than I could count. I think Tom enjoyed hearing my woo-hoos from the pillion seat. Lots of FUN! We made our way through Erin and hopped on the 401 at Guelph. Before long we were home and greeted at the door by Lucas. We toured about 1400 Km in total.

While we were away on our short motorcycle get away, Jackie was working nights and Laura was babysitting Alex. Thanks Mel and Dan for letting Laura stay with you during our absence. Our trip Photo Album can be found here.
