Retro Weekend

1931 PontiacThis weekend we are experiencing a heat wave in Chatham-Kent. The temperatures brought out the shorts, tank tops and summer sandals. On Saturday, Tom, Laura and I went downtown and strolled along King Street to take in the vintage and old muscle cars. It is Retro Fest and the city is a party town of 50’s music, dirty dancing, poodle skirts and cruising the drag. There were over 6oo cars, a Creedence Clearwater revival band and a foam party in Tecumseh park. We checked out a watering hole called River Rock which is the old Centre movie theatre for a brew. This is where Laura’s graduation prom is going to be held.

We were in Chatham from 11:00 to 3 and did not realize John and Rosemary had popped down for an afternoon visit with Irene. She has been is great spirits so I know they all had a good visit. Maybe we can catch you another time guys. In the afternoon I went across the road and bonded with Duncan. He is very good on the leash and is a curious pup when it comes to smells around the farm.

Jackie, Josh and Duncan came for supper on Sunday. Laura had her friend Jason over as well. Tom BBQ’d a delicious top sirloin roast with local asparagus. Jackie made a yummy Asian salad with snow peas, bean sprouts, baby spinach and toasted sesame seeds. You can bring the salad any day Jackie!

It was very hot and we were caught off guard. When we went to turn on the air conditioner but the heat pump would not stay on. Ahhhhhhhhh. It appears that the outside cooling unit burned out the fan motor. Tom went to town to pick up an extra house fan and breaker fuses only to find out he had left his wallet at home. Fuming he returned home and called Handy Brothers Heating and Cooling. They hope to give us a service call on Wednesday or Thursday (lots of other customers – no A/C) so I hope it is a quick fix. In the mean time we surviving the 33ºC heat with a pedestal fan and a box fan Tom T kindly loaned to us. Thanks TT you are a life saver!

  1. :happydanc The A/C repairman just left and things are starting to cool down. When the repair guys come out they are amazed that our old heat pump is still humping along after almost 30 yrs. They get that concerned look on their face and say you might want to start pricing out new cooling/heating systems. Parts are getting hard to find and this is their oldest (still operating) system.

Final diagnosis, outside cooling fan unit shorted out aging crispy wires… inside pump overheats and blows saftey plug dumping freon… pump goes into safe mode and shuts down. Repair wires, evacuate lines, refill with freon, and system starts back up.

  2. Is everyone hunkered down in the newly airconditioned house? Is this what our summer is going to be like for the next 9wks? I still have not planted my annuals and they are looking a little wilty in their little cell boxes.
