The more we do, the more things I see need replacing. All the cement is poured now and yesterday I decided it was time to find the one leak in our roof. During the rains last week, Martha noticed one spot in the kitchen that dripped about 10 drops during a major downpour. I got up on the roof to apply some repair tar and got my shock of the week. All the shingles are brittle and crumbling and there is no way the roof will make it to the spring without leaking in other spots.
I’m waiting on some roof estimates today because the shingles should be replaced before they start the final landscaping. I don’t want any new shrubs etc to get destroyed as the roofing monkeys pitch down all the old shingles and replace with new.
Tim Gillier was down this morning with his backhoe and he dug out all the old shrubs around the house to clear the way for renewal. With all the over-grown greenery removed it’s clear to see how bad the basement windows are.
Oh ya, one more thing. The furnace fan was headed towards self destructed and we are waiting on a new squirrel cage fan. The furnace guy took the fan with him so we are currently without heat until the new part arrives. It didn’t get too cold last night with the electric oven on low and luckily the forecast calls for warmer weather this week. This project feels like it’s going to ruin me before it’s all over. Feel free to send donations made out to… ‘Bottomless Money Pit’ c/o the crying farmer.
It’s about time you spent some money. Did you plan on taking it with you? Or did you want to save it for your lovely children?
With any luck, the new roof will be done by Sat. night before the predicted Sunday rains.
Look at that beautiful blue sky on the farm. You are going to have a wonderful Indian Summer Thanksgiveing weekend in Chatham. Perfect weather for harvesting your bountiful crops.
