Early Thursday morning our tenant across the road was shaken from his sleep by a thunderous crash. It was windy that night and the huge maple tree in his back yard split and hit the ground shaking every window in the house. Luckily nothing was damaged when it hit the ground but what was left of the tree was hanging precariously over my workshop.
The tree service I had called arrived this morning to limb what was hanging over my building. Their boom truck was being repaired so they came with climbing gear and made short work of the tree. They managed to throw a drag line up over the tallest branch and up the rope went spiderman with his chain saw. It was like watching circus performers on the high trapeze only they had chain saws. I was blown away by how fast and efficient they worked and yet barely spoke a word to their coworker as the tree got whittled away limb by limb. Within a couple hours they where packed up and on to their next job. They will return later to drop the main trunk and clean up. Check out some pictures here…
Get your basement cleaned out so you can use that beautiful Franklin woodburning stove of yours. With the hike of fuel costs, burning aged maple hardwood sounds inviting. By the looks of it you have enough wood to last you the entire winter and then some. How many rings were on the tree? Has Martha counted them yet to see the age of the tree?
They haven’t cut the tree off at the ground yet Eileen. They just came to limb the tree and protect the buildings. They are scheduled to return later in the month to freshen up some other trees and finish the job.
I think we have enough school papers in the basement now to heat the house for a couple winters.
Strange cars speeding past the house, vicious muskrats loose in the pond, and now this – a near miss with a loaded tree limb…
I agree with Catherine. I have heard of these “coincidences” before. What really is going on may be a little early Halloween fright staging.

Hope everything settles down.
