Calgary Cleaning Up From Summer Storm

Well it appears Ian isn’t going to post anything so…

Calgary Herald [Fri. Jul. 16 2004] — Calgarians stared down torrential flood conditions as 50 millimetres of rain and hail lashed the city Thursday evening.

Springbank and south Calgary neighbourhoods weathered the brunt of a severe thunderstorm that cut a swath from the Northwest to Southeast quadrants of the city. Roads turned to rivers and hail pummelled neighbourhoods around Discovery Ridge, Signal Hill, Lake Bonavista, Woodlands and Queensland.

Driver Linda Bracegirdle became marooned inside her van within minutes of leaving downtown.

“It was awful, it happened so fast and it was starting to get dark,” she said, adding hail and rain swelled up over car tires at Southland Drive and 24th Street S.W.

Discovery Ridge resident Patricia Van Der Veen watched in awe as hail pelted the ground.

“It was wild. I could barely see a foot ahead of me on the patio. The patio was covered, maybe 20 minutes, flooding all the way up to the sidewalk,” she said.

“The ground was covered in white. It was crazy it was so quick.”

Within minutes, hail covered streets and lawns making some neighbourhoods look like it was winter.

  1. This storm was something else. I saw it on the National! Sorry about your car and the damage to your trees. Let’s hope the rest of the summer goes better for you.
