The temperatures in Haileybury seem to be dipping. My feet are cold just reading your daily forecasts. How on earth do you keep warm up north?

You’re as Young as You Feel
Happy 50th Tom. This day has been anticipated for a long time. Everyone else has hit the milestone and now it is your day. You still have what it takes and I understand that tonight you are going to “walk the line”. 1955 was a very good year…because you were born! HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
A Chilean Dinner Party
It is all about the wine. I fully recommend these two wines to pour for your dinner guests. Ours drank 6 bottles of Bako’s finest. Santa Carolina – Sauvignon Blanc 2005, D.O. Valle Del Rapel. This wine is a deep golden-green colour and is fresh, fruity and crisp. It has a clean taste and is not too dry. The red was Echeverria – Carmenere 2004. It has gold stickers all over the bottle awarding it the 2005 gold tropy winner for Best Value. This Carmenere Red Wine is well balanced with fruit, spice and pepper notes it has a long lasting finish that went well with our spicy ribs.
Our menu for the evening went like this: Asparagus and Cream cheese pate, Chilean Salsa and tortilla chips… yum! Jerusalem Artichoke Soup and Jalapeno Cheese bread to start with. For the main entre we enjoyed Chilean pilaf-type rice, Butternut Squash Casserole, Zesty carrot and sweet onion condiment, warm corn bread, Spicy Baby Back Pork Ribs (marinated in a chile and garlic paste). Dessert we had room for coffee, khalua, and piled high Profiteroles drizzled with Caramel Sauce. These old folks can’t stay up past midnight anymore. You can see more pictures here.
Worth the Two Bucks
I was thoroughly entertained this past weekend. With the 649 Lottery hovering around 30 million I went out and bought two tickets for Saturdays draw. I hadn’t bought a ticket in 20 yrs it seemed and I felt like a rookie laying my money down. I phoned all my friends to say that I was going to win. I was certain since my horoscope said so.

Wilma, I’m home
Brace yourself for the mother of all storms. This is the eve before the winds make landfall once again. We are all glued to the tv watching the incredible devastation that has just taken place in Mexico. The winds have started to blow towards Naples and beautiful Marco Island. It is amazing that these hurricanes have hit the resort areas that we all have visited and loved. We are not in harms way as we chose not to fly to Florida this morning. Pray that the aftermath is not as bad as predicted.
18 now and buying lottery tickets
Steve’s first task for the day was to go out and buy his first lottery ticket. He played a $3 Bingo card and came up empty. He wants to try his hand with Proline next. He was so happy that the convenience store owner asked him for his “id”. He is now talking of going to visit his buddys studying at the University of Ottawa so they can go over to Hull to the pubs. What kind of kid did I raise? Oh the joys of turning 18.
Home for the Holidays
Steve flew in from Kansas (via Air Canada not a tornado) on Thursday to attend his high school graduation and convocation. The ceremonies were held in the gym and it was great to see all the kids again and all grown up. He is off again tomorrow and heading off to Little Rock Arkansas to regroup with his team on their October road trip. He will miss Thanksgiving and the bbq’d maple glazed baby turkeys and his Birthday. I am making him pumpkin pies for tonights dinner (his favourite). Can you believe this weather that we are having. It was 27oC yesterday and I’m lov’n it.
G1 Squared
The city streets of Mississauga will never be the same again now that the Bako boys passed their G1 driving test. They passed on their first write. Turning 16 does have its right to passage. Peter is out practising in the neighbourhood with Nick. They will do their in-class study 25hrs and 10 in-car driving lessons this fall. I now have lots of designated drivers in my household.
Doggie Daycare
Well our friends Cathy and Keith went off for a little romance in Paris this week. We are looking after their dog Cinder while they are away. They are celebrating “empty nest” as their 3 boys are all off to university. Glad to see that they are spending some money on themselves before it all goes to tuition and residences.
Cinder is having a holiday at our place too.
Sweet 16
Peter and Brian are 16yr old today. They woke up in a flurry and ran through their morning routine in a flash. I broke down and drove them to school (2blocks) so they wouldn’t be late. Brian forgot his lunch and also forgot his wallet. He also did a cross country running practice in the rain this afternoon. The day may be hot and humid but the rain is cooling things down from the 36C today. We had a steak dinner tonight and we will have cake when Nick gets home from his company golf tournament. I am very proud of my boys. Some pictures can be found here.
