I am officially on holidays…soaking up the sun with Clive Cussler’s latest hard cover and lovin’ it !
Yesterday it was such a lovely day with lots of sun and no humidity, Tom, Laura and I went for a picnic along the St Clair River Parkway. We had some fixins left over from a dinner party the night before, made a few sandwiches and grabbed the lawn chairs. Off we went to find that perfect spot with rolling green parkland and willow trees with branches inviting you to swing out into the river. The air was clear and the boat and seadoo traffic was active. No big lakers though as it was the fourth of July holiday State side. In the later part of the afternoon we stopped off outside Sombra visited with friends Lynn and Scott for a cold one. Summer is officially here for the Gilliers!

646-Pound Catfish Netted in Thailand
Fishermen in northern Thailand have netted a fish as big as a grizzly bear, a 646-pound Mekong giant catfish, the heaviest recorded since Thai officials started keeping records in 1981. The behemoth was caught in the Mekong River and may be the largest freshwater fish ever found.
The fishermen had hoped to sell the fish to environmental groups, which planned to release it to spawn upriver, but it died before it could be handed over so it was chopped up and sold in pieces (popup picture) to villagers as food. The fish was caught near a remote village in Thailand along the Mekong River, home to more species of giant fish than any other river.

Hot Humid Holiday
The Bako’s are enjoying their pool this hot and humid June. With temperatures well up into the 30’s most days the back garden is being well used. We celebrated Father’s Day traditionally with a bbq dinner. This year I splurged and bought a Blizzard Ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. Nick got 4 solar lanterns for the garden and a solar fish to keep the pool temperature hot. The back yard is our place of solitude away from all the rigors and stress of our everyday lives. I hope everyone is enjoying the heat as we are.
Bak to Bak
Play Ball! Congratulations Peter and Steve on your All Ontario High School Championship win! What a thrill to be able to represent your school and go right to the top. Sorry I missed your first interview on Sports-Line. Good luck in Cincinatti Steve! [edit] – Pictures available here.
21 years of bliss
Congratulations John and Rosemary. May all the nicest things come your way and bring you blessings and continued happiness as you celebrate your special day. Did you know I have my periwinkle bridesmaid bouquet still on my dresser.
Prom Night
Last Friday was Steve’s Prom. He looked very smart in his black tux and bow tie. I bought him a rose for his lapel and a disposable camera to venture off to his dinner dance. The parents all met at a friends house to take pictures of the young ladies and gents all dressed up. Some I hardly recognized as I’m so used to the jeans and tshirts and running shoes. They had a brief reception until the suburban limo showed up. Then all was a buzz and the kids wanted to get the heck away from the parents. This particular group rented rooms at a local Comfort Inn for their after party. They stayed up practically the entire night and checked out at 11am. Steve came home to sleep for the rest of the day. The boys get off easy as all they have to do is show up. The girls did all the arranging and the fussing.
All dressed up
The boys went out to their high school Athletic banquet last night. They wore dress shirts and ties with burmuda style golf shorts and sandals. It was way too hot last night to wear long pants and sit at an awards ceremony. Brian came home all smiles with an MVP plaque in Nordic Skiig and Steve was awarded the School Athletic “L” letter for overall scholastic and athletic achievement. Only a few more weeks left and another year bites the dust. Summer is just around the corner.
Fun at the Strawberry Festival
Today after church, with Laura, Jenny as navigators we set off on a quest to find LaSalle to visit their famous Strawberry Festival. With only a few detours (lunch at Applebee’s and shopping at Windsor Crossing)we found ourselves in beautiful Amhurstburg and decided to follow the Detroit River to Gil Maure Park.

The Roads are Amazing Here
I can’t believe the conditions of the roads so far on this trip. Smooth blacktop on almost every back road I was on today. I’d love to know why NY doesn’t have any frost heaves in the roads like around home. Martha you would have puked for sure today if you were on the bike. Up down left right and then mix it up some more.
I only had about a four hour ride to todays final destination but I took the long way and rode for 7 hours solid. Some of the best roads I turned around and done again. The lakes, the rural hillsides, and the Catskills are gorgeous. Tomorrow’s route looks to be the best yet and it was laid out by one of the local guys and he guarantees a fun time. I can hardly wait, I just hope the weather holds for another couple days.
It’s official…
Well we have put the abode out there for sale. Lot’s of our eggs in this basket. We are nervous about the resulting change. Send any potential buyers our way.
