Laura’s New Job

colesbooks.jpgLaura came home yesterday and announced she went to an interview after school at the downtown mall and got offered a job working at Coles Bookstore. She starts on Sunday. …Hmmm, I wonder what I can start charging her now for room and board. ;-)

Visitor From the Past

Juan and Tom 1967His first visit to Canada was in 1966 and he has finally returned but now with his 15 yr old son, Juan Jr.

Juan Puron was an 11 year old exchange student from Mexico that chose Canada as his destination to learn and hone his English skills. He must have enjoyed himself because he kept coming back each summer season well into his teen years. In decades past the Gilliers have had the pleasure of visits from most of Juan’s siblings (including his parents) and this year Juan and his son arrived on bicycles to tour Ontario almost 40 years later. His early memories of Canada are exact and detailed and he wishes to share new experiences with his son on their bicycle journey through Ontario. Continue reading

Our New Neighbours

Martha, Laura, and I have new neighbours living across the road. We had a woman that was interested in renting the little white house when Jaclyn announced she would like to live there. Jaclyn and her boyfriend Josh started sharing rent at the beginning of April and are getting settled into their new home. Well today they came across to visit and introduce us to their new roommate. They would like to introduce you to Continue reading

Cheerleaders and Hotrods

shamrockToday was our best weather yet. We awoke to warm sun and clear breezes today. Our hotel has been filled to capacity by cheerleaders from across the country that are attending some national championship event. Add to that: Can-Am Days, assorted St Patrick’s Day revelry, and about 300 hotrodders attending the Run To the Sun Car Show and Myrtle Beach was rocking all day today. Martha and Laura spent the morning basting on the beach while I enjoyed watching the girls practice their cheerleading stunts near the pool area. Continue reading

Broadway at the Beach

martha & lauraWith an overcast morning and showers in the forecast we headed out on the morning shuttle down to an area called Broadway at the Beach. It’s basically a tourist trap shopping area built around a man-made lake (map). The girls had fun teasing the carp and ducks with some food they got from the feeding stations. The water boiled with fish, their mouths reaching up and wide open, all competing for a fish pellet. It all seemed so surreal and disturbing to me. Continue reading

Early Morning

It’s 7am and the girls are just starting to stir awake. They must have heard me come back up with a breakfast plate and coffee. Laura joined Martha and they are cuddled up in the big bed with the patio doors slid wide open so they can watch the early morning joggers on the beach and hear the waves crashing on the shore. I hope they don’t always expect to awaken to views like this while on holidays. Jackie I’m missing you already and wish you could have joined us.

Happy Birthday Jaclyn

jaclyn-24thToday is Jaclyn’s 24th birthday. She stumbled downstairs this morning to let her cat inside and promptly scolded Lucas for not catching a mouse for her birthday. He has been known to leave the odd hunting present at the front door but I guess he forgot this morning was special.

Jaclyn and I went to Pranovi’s for a nice leisurely lunch before she had to be at work. We started off with a couple cold Stella Artois. She had the soup du jur and Manicotti special and I had a garden salad and the Salsa Franco. We ended our luncheon with tea and coffee but neither of us had room for dessert. Oh well, we can have the birthday cake when she’s finishes work. My favourite Jaclyn quote at lunch today was “Oh my God Dad, I don’t like getting older”. :roflol:

Happy Birthday baby.

Enhancing Airport Security?

lockAt the airport where this guy works works, security has gotten a lot more attention since 9/11. All the security doors that connect the concourses to office spaces and alleyways for service personnel needed an immediate upgrade. It seems that the use of a security badge was no longer adequate protection.

So over the course of about a month, more than 50 doors were upgraded to require three-way protection. To open the door, a user needed to present a security badge (something you possess), a numeric code (something you know) and a biometric thumb scan (something you are). “Present all three, and the door beeps and lets you in.” Continue reading
