First Snow of the Season

1st snow of 2005Laura and Martha awoke today with visions of a “snow day” in their heads but alas it was only buses that were canceled. While they packed up for school, I backed the car up onto the road (also not plowed yet) so they could trundle off into town. It looks like we got about 10 inches of snow over night and it’s our first accumulation for the season. Jaclyn had today off work, so her and Josh went to Toronto to visit with some close friends for the weekend. It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. :xmascheer

Livetrap was Successful

supperI managed to borrow a live trap from the neighbours to help with Martha’s autumn muskrat harvest. Well we got our first hit this afternoon, and since times are tough down on the farm, I dressed him out and roasted him for supper. He was delicious. Too bad Jaclyn wasn’t home to try it.

Testing Some New Software

wplogo I’ve been playing around with some new blog scripts and thought I give this one a test drive. Let me know what you think. I still have to come up with a user friendly photo album script that most of you can operate and a few other perks.

Things That Go Thump in the Night

crashEarly Thursday morning our tenant across the road was shaken from his sleep by a thunderous crash. It was windy that night and the huge maple tree in his back yard split and hit the ground shaking every window in the house. Luckily nothing was damaged when it hit the ground but what was left of the tree was hanging precariously over my workshop.

Muskrat Love… no more.

It rained steady here during most of last night. That usually allows me to sleep in a little longer, but today I was awakened by Martha screaming “Tom, come here quick!” I bolted out of bed, (head rush) pulled on some pants and found Martha at her pond with a mini snow shovel blocking the entrance to the pond skimmer box.

Exciting Police Chase Out Front Today

ckcops.gifI was backing my pickup out of the driveway after lunch today when Ed Gillier pulls up and stops on the gravel road to chat about the upcoming harvest plans. A few minutes later I notice a red chev pickup coming from the west like a bat out of hell. I pulled Ed by his arm onto the front lawn because I was confident this guy was going to loose control on the gravel trying to get between Ed’s pickup and my mailbox. He was going at least 180kph and swept by us in a red flash. The only thing I saw was a CSI logo on the door and some kind of web url decal on the tailgate. He attempted to slow for the stop sign but started weaving for the ditch so he just blew through the sign continuing east bound towards the Kentbridge Rd.

TGIF: Dinner and a Cruise :-)

picture album linkTo celebrate Martha completing her first week back to school I called her up after dismissal on Friday and asked her out to dinner. The weather has been outstanding the last few weeks so I thought a leisurely bike trip to Marine City, Mi might be fun. We took the back roads and decided to cross into Michigan via the Walpole ferry and return on the Bluewater ferry at Sombra. The air was clear but warm and the ferry ride was fun with the bow slapping the waves and the spray gleaming in the late afternoon sun. Of course I walked a little too close to the gaping bow ramp and got the leg of my riding pants drenched. Laughing

I had intended on going to a restaurant called Bill’s Duck Inn for supper. We hadn’t been there for almost two decades and I wanted to check out the latest owner’s menu. We didn’t even get north of Algonac, Mi when the aroma from McRae’s Big River Grill had Martha tapping my back and saying lets eat here instead. [Catherine, this is the old Sid’s on the Seaway Restaurant, remember? ] It was a blast from the past because this was a restaurant Mom and Dad had taken our family to (on VERY special occasions only) before I was even a teenager Eek! One of the few things I recall from Sid’s was the red transparent plastic straws they used put in their soft drinks when all I had ever experienced before was paper straws, oh the decadence. Flash forward some 40 odd years and now this restaurant has a Caribbean-inspired menu with great views of the river and a laid back Caribbean theme decor.

Trip to Kingston

We left Eileen’s around 1pm today packing a picnic lunch she gratuitously made for us to enjoy. It was nice to finally clear the GTA traffic and enjoy the scenery. We ventured off 401 and took a bunch of backroads along the lake front and happened upon a desolate dead end road that took us to Willow Beach (near Port Hope) for our picnic. [Pictures] Laura was concerned due to the no trespassing sign but by the time any cop could locate us we would be fed and long gone.

We arrived in Kingston around 5pm and checked into the Holiday Inn Waterfront, got unpacked, and broke open the box of Caesar cocktails that Martha had brought from home. We’re heading out now to check out some restaurants for supper.
