Retro Weekend

1931 PontiacThis weekend we are experiencing a heat wave in Chatham-Kent. The temperatures brought out the shorts, tank tops and summer sandals. On Saturday, Tom, Laura and I went downtown and strolled along King Street to take in the vintage and old muscle cars. It is Retro Fest and the city is a party town of 50’s music, dirty dancing, poodle skirts and cruising the drag. There were over 6oo cars, a Creedence Clearwater revival band and a foam party in Tecumseh park. We checked out a watering hole called River Rock which is the old Centre movie theatre for a brew. This is where Laura’s graduation prom is going to be held. Continue reading

Dirty Don’s Oysters and Margaritas

We hopped on the bus around 4pm so we could catch all the happy hour specials up and down the strip. We ended up at a place on 21st called Dirty Don’s Oyster Bar and proceeded to consume a pitcher of lime Margaritas, 1½ dozen raw oysters, 1½ dozen hot wings, ½ dozen jumbo shrimp, and an order of chicken planks. They even gave me a free t-shirt! By the time I got out of there my lips were burning and my speech was slightly slurred. We had a great time and then decided to cross the street and try our hand at mini-golf. I think Tom and I played our best game ever and Laura was ticked she couldn’t beat her inebriated parents.

Martha on the Mend

I have been battling a cold for over a week. I go no where without my box of kleenex and a spritzer of hand sanitizer! The post nasal drip had moved to my chest and developed into an annoying cough. Tom and the girls cringed every time I hacked. Last night I was up till 3 in the morning coughing, gagging, wheezing and not able to sleep. When I got banished to the couch to sleep I knew it was time to go see a doctor!

I went to the new walk in clinic at the Great Canadian Superstore and was seen within the hour. The doctor was very thorough and diagnosed me with bronchitis and a sinus infection. I a happy to say after one day on amoxicillin I am feeling much better. Let’s hope no one else in the house catches this bug just before March Break!

Happy Birthday Bill H.

Wishing Bill H. a happy birthday today. Let’s hope he finds a good spot to keep warm. Here is an Irish Wish for you.

May there always be work
for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold
a coin or two.
May the sun shine warm
on your windowpane.
May a rainbow be certain
to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend
always be near you.
And may your heart find
enough gladness to cheer you.

Gas Hikes…Yikes!

gas.gifWell I can not believe it… when I drove home from work today there were 4 block line ups for gas at every station. Jackie had warned me last night the talk at the newspaper was a 50 cent price hike for gas. I drove across town to a gas station on Hwy#2 thinking perhaps the lines were shorter, and I was right. The gas was at yesterdays price and I topped up at $1.04 a litre. Else where in Chatham when I drove back home the price gouging was as high as, get this… $1.79 Eek!

Bike Trip to Cottage Country

Photo-Album-LinkTom and I packed up the bike and headed off for a 3 day motorcycle trip through cottage country this week. The weather was warm so we wore shorts under our protective riding gear. We followed along Lake Huron and decided to stop for a lunch break in Goderich. We then cut across the Bruce Peninsula at Owen Sound and made a rest stop at a shady park along the Meaford River. Later in the afternoon we stopped in Collingwood for gas and I slipped next door and bought a pastry from the Swiss bakery. We sat at their streetside cafe table and enjoyed the people watching while we consumed our coffee and pastry.

We stopped for the night at a bed and breakfast in the Horseshoe Valley area called the Heigh Head B&B. Our accommodations were very comfortable including a king size feather bed, the whole lower floor entertainment room, library, and small dinette. After we unpacked and changed out of our clothes, we relaxed in the hot tub on the lower patio. Around 8 pm we searched out a local eatery called Abbott?s of Craighurst and enjoyed pints of beer from Creemore Brewery and then had a delicious meal.

Our trip Photo Album can be found here.

1000 Islands

Yesterday we experienced the fun at Fort Henry National Historic Site. It is a living museum of military life in the 1800’s with tours, artillery demos and parade of guards. We explored the fort and museums til 1:30. It was very interesting and the students re-enacting the roles did a great job. They even did not mind answering my 101 questions. The weather was very comfortable and perfect for walking about. More pictures start here
